Whitewashed Aegean island village above a sheltered cove

Midday under a high, clear sky

Painting of a whitewashed Greek island village climbing a sunlit hillside above a deep blue sea, with a white chapel and cobalt dome at its heart, pink bougainvillea, cypress trees, a turquoise cove and a small red-and-white boat.

The Blue Domes Above the Aegean

A whitewashed island village climbs a sunlit hillside around a cobalt-domed chapel, above a turquoise cove and a deep sapphire sea at midday.

By midday on a small Aegean island, the light has stopped being a visitor and become the whole climate. It pours down over a hillside of whitewashed houses, and every wall answers with a glow, so bright that the shadows turn lilac and blue rather than grey. At the centre of the village stands a little chapel, its single dome the deep cobalt of the sea below, and its slender bell tower raised like a finger to the sky.

Around it the houses stack and tumble up the slope in cubes and terraces, their shutters and doors painted the same blue as the dome. Stone steps wander between them without any apparent plan, linking one tiny courtyard to the next. Bougainvillea spills over the walls in loud magenta clusters, the one extravagant note in a place otherwise made of restraint, and a few dark cypresses stand upright among the roofs like punctuation marks.

Below the village, the hill breaks into warm ochre rock and low green scrub, then lets go into a sheltered cove. The water there is clear turquoise, so shallow that the sand shows through in pale ribbons, and it deepens quickly to a rich sapphire where the open sea begins. A small red-and-white fishing boat rests near the shore, perhaps the only thing in the scene that is not entirely still.

The painting is built in broad, confident strokes of thick, opaque colour, in the spirit of mid-century travel posters. Edges are clean, planes of light and shadow are kept simple, and the palette is limited to white, cobalt, turquoise and sapphire, warmed by ochre and that bright flash of pink. Far across the water, a hazy lilac island floats on the horizon beneath a high, clear sky with only a few thin ribbons of cloud.

It is the kind of hour when the island seems to hold its breath. The streets are quiet, the sea is calm, and the only sound is the faint slap of water against stone. Nothing needs to happen. The day simply rests in the light, bright and unhurried, waiting for the afternoon breeze.
